Happy 74th Birthday, Hayo Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki celebrates his 74th birthday today. Many happy returns, and best wishes for his newest (unannounced) projects. What will that be? His currently-delayed Samurai manga serial? A Ghibli Museum short film? The next Studio Ghibli feature film?

This famous photograph is from the production of Horus, Prince of the Sun in 1967. Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuo Otsuka all posed for photos for the film's opening action sequence, specifically a shot of Horus swinging his axe in a wide arc. The screenshot was taken from the 2004 DVD, Yasuo Otsuka's Joy in Motion, a Studio Ghibli direct-to-video documentary that I recommend at every opportunity. The TV used was a monster Sony CRT HDTV that I owned a couple years ago. That thing was as big as a tank, and weighed nearly as much.  But the picture quality was glorious.  You'll never see monstrous machines like those again.
