Ponyo - The Short, Short Review

Okay, I don't have time for the long, epic essays on Ponyo yet, and I want everyone to have a chance to see it first. So we're gonna take no chances, we're gonna do the short, short version of my review. Here it is:

Ponyo deserves a nomination for Best Picture. End of story.

Too bad they don't nominate animated films for Best Picture. They just slump them all together into the Best Animated Feature category...

Even if Ponyo was hands down the best film of the year by a country mile, it still wouldn't get the nomination. They created "Best Animated Feature" to ensure that a nominated film never gets put into that category again. "Beauty and the Beast" will likely remain the only animated film to garner such an nomination.

As for "Best Animated Feature", I think we're going to see 5 nominations this year for the first time in a few years. (due to all of the eligible films) My early guess for the 5 that will be nominated are: Coraline, Up, Ponyo, Princess and the Frog and Fantastic Mr.Fox.

That said, I haven't seen Ponyo yet, my girlfriend told me I had to wait till she gets back from Seattle on Monday.

Amen to that. Ponyo is the only movie this year (so far) that had me stuck to the chair in awe every second, every frame.

Great comments! It inspired me to write another reply that turns into a full-fledged post, so thanks for that.

Short, Short Version: We have 10 Best Picture nominees because, in the eyes of many, Wall-E Wuz Robbed. There's going to be pressure to put one animation film on that list. If that happens, it's either going to be Pixar's UP, or Miyazaki's Ponyo.

Obviously, I'm pushing for Ponyo. My latest attempt at tilting at windmills.
