She's heeeeere!!!

Ponyo opens today on 800 screens in the United States. It is the widest release of any Studio Ghibli movie by far, has received top support from Disney, Steven Spielberg's producers, and Pixar's John Lasseter. The buzz is high, the Ghibli Freaks are eager, and the critics are swooning - 96% on the Tomatometer as of this morning (the score is 44-2).

Well, you've all been screeching and bawling for Hayao Miyazaki to finally get some support in this stupid country. Now you have your wish. The rest is up to you. It's your goal to put as many seats into those theaters as possible this weekend and generate word-of-mouth buzz. If you have family members who love My Neighbor Totoro, this is the perfect movie for them. Drag 'em to the multiplex with a handful of tickets. Then race 'em back to the line for the second showing.

We only get to see a new Miyazaki film on the big screen once every four years. He has now directed 10 feature films and is 68 years old. Do the math, kids. You will not have many more opportunities to experience this again. Remember what the seniors at the old folks' home on The Simpson's say - every episode of Matlock may be our last! Hurry!

If only they were showing it where I live :( I'd bring a bunch of friends!

That's why we're all going to spend all our play money this weekend. If Ponyo makes enough money, Disney will expand to more movie screens. This is a very common strategy, and there's always one breakaway indie hit every year. Everything is aligned for Ponyo to be this year's hit.

Be patient. We'll do our part.

did you see the ridiculous review on rotten tomatoes by the huffington post blogger.

takes great exception to the fact that ponyo can be cute and scary at the same time (i wonder what he would make of the cat-bus?) - and turns the review into a terribly (un)insightful critique of japanese culture.
its a wonder he didn't use the word "japanimation".

brother.

I had a fun time going yesterday (being the first time I saw the film)! Glad to have waited.
